Sejarah Singkat SMKN Perikanan Provinsi Riau
Sekolah menengah kejuruan (SMK) Negeri Perikanan Provinsi Riau awalnya adalah Sekolah Usaha Perikanan Menengah (SUPM) yang dibuka pada tahun 1985/1986, dan merupakan perkembangan dari Sekolah UsahaPerikanan Pertama (SUPP) Dumai yang sudah ada sejak 1967. Berdasarkan surat keputusan kepala dinas Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Provinsi Riau No: Kpts.491 2015,maka sekolah perikanan menengah (SUPM) yang dikelola Dinas Perikanan berubahmenjadi sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) Perikanan. Sekolah ini mempunyai empat jurusan yaitu jurusan Agribisnis Perikanan Air Tawar, Nautikan Kapal Penangkap Ikan,Teknika Kapal Penangkap Ikan dan Agribisnis Pengolahan Hasil Perikanan.
Sebagai sekolah kejuruan yang lulusnya diharapkan mempunyai keterampilan dan dapat bekerja dalam bidang tertentu,menjadi warga negara yang mandiri, masih sangat minim sarana praktek seperti Kolam untuk praktek pembudidayaan, ruang pembibitan (Hatchery). Program keahlian Nautika Kapal Penangkap Ikan (NKPI) yang menyiapkan siswa yang akan bekerja dikapal harus dilengkapi dengan sertifikat BST (Basic Safety Training)sebagai persyaratan untuk bekerja dikapal, serta sertifikat ANKAPIN (Ahli Nautika Kapal Penangkap Ikan) untuk yang bekerja di kapal ikan.
Sistem pembelajaran di SMK Perikanan dilaksanakan menggunakan kurikulum2013 Revisi 2018 (Spectrum). Perubahan nomenklatur SUPM menjadi SMKN Perikanan memberikan tantangan terutama dalam hal kegiatan belajar, karena guru-guru banyak berlatar pendidikan non kependidikandan mereka belum pernah mendapat pelatihan untuk pengembangan profesional sebagai tenaga pendidik. Begitu juga buku-buku untuk siswa sangat minim sekali.
Siswa yang belajar di SMKN Perikanan berasal dari berbagai Kabupaten /Kota yang ada di Riau, dengan calon siswa mendaftar ke SMKN Perikanan kemudian mengikuti beberapa tahap seleksi, tes tertulis, dan kesehatan. Umumnya siswa yang mendaftar berasal dari keluarga yang ekonominya kurang mampu dan diprioritaskan dari orang tua yang berprofesi sebagai nelayan.
